What is filler dissolving?

Filler dissolving uses an enzyme called hyaluronidase to break down hyaluronic acid — the active ingredient in the vast majority of dermal fillers. When injected into a filled area, hyaluronidase rapidly dissolves the HA chains, causing the filler to break down and be absorbed naturally by the body.

The result is visible within 24–72 hours and, in most cases, complete — restoring the area to its pre-treatment state or correcting specific problem areas within a treated zone.

Bad filler correction — when dissolving is the right choice

Not all filler results require complete dissolution. Sometimes a targeted, partial dissolve — removing product from a specific area while leaving the rest — is more appropriate than full removal. In others, complete dissolution is the only way to reset and start fresh. Dr Gregorio assesses each case individually during consultation to determine the most appropriate approach.

Every reason for dissolving is valid. There is no wrong reason to want filler removed. These are the most common situations Dr Gregorio addresses.

The most serious complication of filler — where product obstructs a blood vessel. Hyaluronidase must be administered immediately as an emergency medical procedure. This is the most critical use of filler dissolving and requires a doctor to manage.
